I got it to work.  When you have the screen open in "edit" mode, where you type regularly, go up to icon menu at top and click "wikitext" and then enter "<math>\alpha^2+\beta^2=1</math>" in that mode and press save.  It worked for me.  If you enter the formula in the regular "write" mode, it doesn't calculate, only displays, but "wikitext" mode makes it calculate.

Sorry to hear wepaint doesn't do. I gotta add this about rendering to the tour and guide I'm developing and finishing up this weekend;-)
